The math on cardboard usually surprises people

A typical 1-bedroom move needs 25–35 boxes. At a hardware store, moving boxes run $1.50–$3.50 each for standard sizes. Add tape, a tape gun, and packing paper, and you are looking at $50–$100 before you have moved a single item. Then those boxes occupy your living space for a week while you pack, and you spend another evening breaking them all down afterward. That breakdown step is the one almost everyone forgets to account for.

Rain is the cardboard killer

Moves happen on all kinds of days. A cardboard box that gets wet during a loader run across a rainy driveway loses structural integrity fast — corners buckle, bottoms fail.

Where cardboard still makes sense

We are not here to oversell. Cardboard makes more sense if you need to ship items across the country, need irregular shapes, or already have a large free stash from a grocery run. For a local move within Frederick County — where bins get delivered, used, and picked up — the math and the convenience both favor rentals.

The one thing we cannot fully replace

Very small or oddly shaped items — lamp shades, large mirrors, artwork — may need custom cardboard or foam padding regardless. We recommend a hybrid: rent bins for everything that fits (clothes, books, kitchen items, electronics), and use a handful of specialty boxes only for the items that actually need them.
